Important Update for British Expatriates on Voting Eligibility

Important Update for British Expatriates on Voting Eligibility

Recent legislative changes in the UK have extended the right to vote in General Elections to most British citizens living abroad, including those who have resided outside the UK for more than 15 years. This development aims to ensure that all eligible British nationals can participate in the democratic process, regardless of their location.

The registration process has been streamlined to be straightforward and accessible. To register, British expatriates need only their passport, National Insurance number, and the last postal address they had in the UK. Here are the simple steps to follow:

  1. Register to vote online by visiting www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.
  2. Appoint a proxy to vote on your behalf, which can be done from the USA or Canada at www.gov.uk/apply-proxy-vote.

These steps ensure that British citizens living overseas can continue to have a voice in UK elections.
